A little about me

I’m Dr. Stephanie Farnsworth, a Lecturer in Media and Communications at the University of Sunderland. My research specialises in mutants, monsters, and the Weird. My work often sits at the intersection of biopolitics and monster studies, and my upcoming monograph with McFarland uses Mass Effect as a case study to examine the representations of different types of bodies.

Before I entered academia, I worked as a journalist and editor for six years. My experience writing for magazines and websites is visible within my work. I strive to make even my academic research as accessible and engaging as possible for general fans of monsters, science fiction, and horror.

I am also passionate about connecting researchers across disciplines to further collaborative opportunities. In 2020, I co-founded the academic network MultiPlay which supports a multidisciplinary approach to games studies and digital play. I act as co-Chair and lead MultiPlay’s editorial board.
